What’s the best screen capture application for video walkthroughs?

We create a lot of short tutorials for our clients. Whether its a quick run through the Joomla! admin menus or a feature review of a custom module we created in Drupal - we prefer creating short demos instead of writing the explanation out long hand - ouch.

So we’ve been using a great product called Jing since they launched. TechSmith Corp. created some great free software to capture your screen, whether moving video or static screen grab. We love video capabilities.

One of the things we’ve found missing in Jing is cursor highlight… if we’re not recording audio (because we have no mic, or ambient is too loud), we find ourselves wagging the cursor around to bring the viewer’s attention to a particular spot! Not good.

So we’re on the hunt for another screen sharing application. We know that we can upgrade to Jing Pro for a few bucks a year, but we don’t mind advertising for them. Their mothership product called Camtasia is a venerable contender, but it might be a little too much horsepower for what we need to do.

Pure-Mac has a nice list of screen grab applications. We’ll keep you posted of our progress while we try to find the best solution. Please drop us a line, or comment with your favorite screen capture application - and tell us what you create with it!
